Sports mental coaching

Mental Coaching for Athletes

Your body is trained. Is your mind? Mental coaching for athletes helps you perform in competition the way you perform in training, whether you play club rugby on Saturdays or compete for a living.

The CoreCraft Method brings it to you as an 18-week online course, built on the system Niel Geyser used in Dricus du Plessis’s corner.

The mental gap

Why skilled athletes plateau

Most athletes who stall are not short of fitness or technique. They are short of a trained response to pressure. In competition, attention narrows and turns inward, nerves push activation past the useful zone, and one mistake turns into three. Athletes rehearse their physical skills thousands of times and their mental response to pressure almost never.

Sports mental coaching closes that gap. In the CoreCraft Method you learn two frameworks at a time for the moments where your performance drops, practise them in training for a week, and refine them until they hold up on match day.

Coaching tested where the margin is mental

Niel Geyser was the grappling and mental performance coach in Dricus du Plessis’s corner for his UFC Middleweight Championship, and he has guided MMA champions in other promotions. He holds a 3rd Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a Judo black belt, and has been South African Judo Champion, South African Kurash Champion and African World Pro BJJ Champion. He also coaches professional golfers, professional cyclists and lawn bowls champions, using the same mental models in every sport.

What athletes work on

Mental skills you can train like any other

Pre-competition routine

A short, repeatable routine that gives your mind a job in the last hour before you compete.

Nerves and self-doubt

Find your ideal activation level for your sport, and how to settle or lift yourself into it.

High-pressure moments

Stay on the next action when the score, the crowd or the stakes start pulling at your attention.

Resetting after mistakes

A rehearsed reset so one error doesn’t become a run of them.

Debrief and learning

An honest post-competition review that tells you exactly what to train next.

Consistency over streaks

Perform at your level more often, not just on your good days.

Who it’s for

Who this coaching is for

Athletes at every level, in any competitive code. Niel’s coaching spans:

Elite results show how far the method can go. They are not an entry requirement. If you compete and want your mind to keep up with your training, this is for you.

“Action without the necessary understanding does not create results.”

— Niel Geyser

How to start

Two ways to start

On your own: the CoreCraft Method

An 18-week online course for R500 per month, opening for enrolment soon. Everyone starts at Week 1: a theory week to learn two concepts, then a practice week to use them in training and competition, with the CoreCraft app. Cancel any time.

With your squad or club

Teams of five or more take the course together from a shared start date, at the same price per seat. The club sees group totals only, never an athlete’s personal answers.

Private one-on-one coaching with Niel is available by application through the contact page.

Common questions

Questions about mental coaching for athletes

Do amateur and club athletes benefit from mental coaching?

Yes. Amateur athletes often have the most to gain, because they have rarely trained the mental side deliberately and competition nerves hit them hardest.

Is mental coaching for athletes the same as sports psychology?

No. A mental performance coach trains performance skills and does not diagnose or treat. In South Africa, “psychologist” is a protected title for practitioners registered with the HPCSA. If anxiety, disordered eating or low mood is affecting your health, see a registered psychologist or your doctor first.

Can athlete coaching be done online?

Yes. The CoreCraft Method is an online course with the CoreCraft app, for R500 per month, so you can start from anywhere once enrolment opens. Squads and clubs of five or more can take it together.

How soon will I notice a difference?

Most athletes notice changes in how they handle specific moments within a few weeks of consistent practice. The course is built around that: every second week is a practice week. Lasting change depends on how much you apply the work in training and competition.
