Online performance coaching has made mental performance work available to people who would never have had access to it ten years ago. You no longer need to live near a coach, fit appointments into a working day or pay elite-sport prices. But if you have never worked with a coach before, the whole idea can feel vague. What actually happens? Does it work through a screen? Is it right for you?
This guide answers those questions plainly, using CoreCraft’s own online course, the CoreCraft Method, as a worked example.
What is online performance coaching?
Online performance coaching is mental performance coaching delivered remotely: by video, voice, messaging or a mix. An online performance coach teaches you the mental skills behind performing under pressure, such as focus, emotional control, preparation and decision-making, and helps you apply them in your own sport, work or home life. You get the method and the feedback without needing to be in the same room.
There are three broad formats:
- One-on-one online coaching: scheduled video or phone sessions with a coach, built around your specific goals. More personal, and usually more expensive.
- Group online coaching: a coach works with a group through a shared programme, content and live sessions. More affordable, and you learn alongside other people working on the same material.
- Online courses: a structured programme of lessons you work through at your own pace, often with an app or workbook for practice. The most affordable, and the most dependent on you doing the work.
How the CoreCraft Method works
The CoreCraft Method is an 18-week online course built on Niel Geyser’s methodology. It is designed for people who want structured mental performance work that fits into a normal life. Here is what it looks like in practice:
- Start any day (once enrolment opens). Everyone starts at Week 1, with a sign-in link to the CoreCraft app.
- A theory week. Two concepts at a time: short video lessons, audio versions and a printable guide.
- A practice week. You use those two concepts in real moments, guided by short voice notes and the app’s morning and evening routine.
- A weekly debrief. Every Saturday you look back on the week in the app and set your next starting point.
- Move up the layers. Four layers: Foundation, Inner Technology, Operating System, and Strategy & Navigation. You move up when the work is lived, not when a calendar says so.
- Earn your Black Belt. Graduate all four layers and you join Applied Expression: the Black Belt group and the CoreCraft network of high performers.
It costs R500 per month, billed monthly, with no sign-up fee and no contract. At the fastest pace the course takes 18 weeks, and you can cancel any time.
Does online coaching actually work?
It is a fair question. Mental performance coaching is mostly about learning frameworks, applying them in real situations and reflecting on what happened. None of that requires a shared room. In some ways, online coaching suits it better, because the learning arrives in the middle of your actual week rather than in an office once a fortnight.
What makes online coaching work or fail is not the medium but the structure:
- A clear method, so you know what you are learning and why.
- Regular contact, so the work stays front of mind.
- Application, so frameworks turn into habits.
- Feedback, so you can adjust.
The CoreCraft Method is the same methodology Niel uses face to face. It was built over more than twenty years in combat sport, business and leadership, and it is set out in his book, The Black Belt Way. Niel has coached in UFC fight camps, including as the grappling and mental performance coach in Dricus du Plessis’s corner for his UFC Middleweight Championship, as well as with professional golfers, cyclists, lawn bowls champions and executives.
Who is online performance coaching for?
You don’t need to be a professional athlete or a CEO. Online performance coaching suits:
- The weekend athlete who keeps getting in their own head before a race or match
- The professional who knows they are capable of more but can’t get out of their own way
- The entrepreneur who is good at the work but struggles with the mental weight of running a business
- The parent juggling everything and running on empty
- The person rebuilding after a setback who wants structure, not slogans
- Anyone outside Pretoria and Johannesburg who wants Niel’s methodology without travelling
When an online course isn’t the right fit
A self-paced course isn’t for everyone, and it is better to know that before you join.
- You need individual attention on a specific, time-bound goal, such as a fight camp or a career transition. Private one-on-one coaching with Niel is available by application through the contact page.
- You are dealing with a mental-health concern. Coaching is not therapy. Please speak to a registered psychologist or your doctor first.
- You want someone else to do the work. Coaching gives you frameworks and feedback. The change comes from applying them.
